Hello, long time no see.
For the past few weeks, me and my friends Berat, Mustafa and Samet were busy making some corpus-based teaching materials.
Our topic was Make VS Do, we wanted to teach the students how to differentiate and use them accurately as it is a topic that many learners confuse. We began by testing the background knowledge of the students then we used COCA to make them familiar with the authentic use of make and do, after that we tried to guide them inductively so they can figure out the patterns on their own, and finally there were some exercises.
It was a fun and an engaging task, but also time consuming. As the materials needed to be explained clearly and the layout needed to be suitable. Nevertheless, I think this method is great and quite effective for the students. The advantages are numerous, students get familiar with authentic language use, they learn new patterns, they are engaged and etc.
The few problems I can see would be students being unfamiliar or unable to understand how to use corpus, in addition to the teacher not having a full grasp on technology, and finally the time it needs to prepare suitable materials.
We also made a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model :
